Open the app and read How to read with BetterRead — it takes a few minutes and shows you everything.
To add something to read, tap + on the home screen and choose a link, a file, a free book or a scan of printed pages, or paste text. You can also share to BetterRead from Safari, Files or Mail.
Web links; EPUB, PDF, MOBI and AZW3, FictionBook (FB2), Word (DOCX), RTF, HTML and plain-text files; printed pages you scan; and free books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks and Vietnamese Wikisource.
Books bought from most ebook stores are copy-protected (DRM), and their text can't be read by other apps. DRM-free EPUB books work — many publishers and stores sell them.
If BetterRead says the PDF is pictures of pages, it is a scan with no text inside — try scanning the pages with BetterRead instead. A PDF where you can select the words will work. If it says the PDF needs a password, save an unlocked copy from another app and add that.
Tap ✦ Ask at the bottom of the reader for a recap, an explanation of the page, or to ask a question about the book. It never spoils what's ahead. Ask uses Apple Intelligence, so it needs a device that supports it, with Apple Intelligence turned on in the Settings app.
Tap Aa while reading. Choose one of six themes, then adjust the typeface, text size and spacing.
Press and hold on a word, drag to select more, then tap Capture. In Guide, where holding moves the words, double-tap a word to select it.
Yes. With BetterRead Pro you can download BetterRead's natural voices from the reading controls. You can also install better system voices: in the Settings app, open Accessibility › Read & Speak (Spoken Content on some versions) › Voices, choose your language and download an Enhanced or Premium voice. BetterRead uses the best voice you have installed.
In BetterRead, open Settings › Language. The app changes at once.
In BetterRead, open Settings › Manage subscription, or in the Settings app open [your name] › Subscriptions. If you bought Pro on another device, use Settings › About › Restore purchases in BetterRead.
Yes. What you read stays on your device and, if you use iCloud sync, in your own iCloud account. Apple Intelligence, translation and the voices all run on your device. See the Privacy Policy.
